Professional Philosophy Statement

Writing is a tool that is used by many people every day, but that does not mean it is used well. While studying professional and technical writing at the Missouri State University undergraduate and graduate levels, I have learned invaluable methods to write clearly and concisely in all writing endeavors.

My master’s degree has allowed me to amass significantly more writing experience than my bachelor’s. These writing and editing experiences provide me with a wealth of learning opportunities to take with me after graduation. Crafting messages isn't just about sharing facts but about connecting and helping others understand. Throughout my studies, I've learned not just about words but also about using visuals, digital tools, and strategy in communication.

My degree isn't just a school accomplishment; it shows I've worked hard to understand technical writing. It mixes theory and hands-on learning to give me the skills needed in this field. This degree means more than just good grades; it shows I'm ready to excel in the world of technical communication, no matter which career I choose to pursue.

Presently, my goal is to obtain a job in an editing or book publishing field, and I can’t think of a better program to prepare me for those endeavors. With extensive client projects, real-world studies, and knowledgeable faculty, I feel ready to learn and grow in a workplace.

Being honest, accurate, and thinking about the reader's needs are essential to consider in my writing. This ranges from ensuring documents are accessible to a wide variety of demographics to doing my research on any document I encounter. I've learned this through my studies and my work as a content strategist, travel writer, and in my role as a graduate assistant for the Office of Strategic Communication.

Studying for a master's in technical writing has changed how I see things. It's taught me that writing is more than words strung together. It's about crafting messages that are clear and concise and will work well on different platforms.

In summation, my professional philosophy revolves around the values of making connections, understanding different ways to communicate, and always being mindful of ethical practices. The MA in Writing: Technical and Professional Writing track is the key to propel me toward my goal in book publishing with a unique blend of theoretical insight and practical skills. This philosophy, deeply rooted in a passion for writing and editing, gives me the opportunity to contribute to the dynamic landscape of professional communication.
